Diode for reducing the voltage output
November 26, 2008 by rwb, under Yet Another Tips.
When a silicon diode is in forward bias, the voltage drop across the PN junction is about 0.7 volt, therefore this behavior can be used for reducing the 4 x AA/AAA alkaline battery (it’s about 6 volt) to power your Microcontroller project. Most of Microntrollers can operate safely up to 5.5 volt, by reducing 0.7 volt you will get about 5.3 volt output. The following schematic show you how to do it
Use any general rectifier diode such as 1N4001, 1N4002, etc. The 0.1uF capacitor is used for filtering the noise.
